The Post-Study Work Visa is for recent graduates who completed eligible New Zealand study and meet the requirements, allowing them to stay and work after graduation. It can be valid for up to three years, but the outcome depends on the qualification and study history—it is not automatic for every graduate.[1]

It is not a job guarantee, a resident visa or a guaranteed approval. Programme choice matters from the start because qualification level, the eligible-programme list, study duration and work conditions can affect the outcome.

Who needs to check eligibility?

Immigration New Zealand says applicants must have recently completed New Zealand study with an approved qualification, meet health and character requirements, have a genuine reason for coming to New Zealand and have enough money for living expenses.[1]

For degree level 7 or higher, the qualification must have been studied full-time for at least 30 weeks in New Zealand. For eligible non-degree level 7 or lower qualifications, the study must be full-time in New Zealand for the required duration and the eventual job must be related to the field of study.[1][2]

An institution name alone is therefore not enough. Check the NZQCF level, qualification type, study delivery and programme eligibility before accepting an offer.

How long can a Post-Study Work Visa be valid?

Immigration New Zealand says the visa can last for up to three years, depending on the qualification and length of study.[1] Its Operational Manual says eligible master’s or doctoral qualifications may receive three years; for some level 8 or lower qualifications, the duration may match the provider-confirmed study time.[4]

Do not assume that every two- or three-year programme creates the same visa duration. The visa period is assessed under the rules in force and the study evidence submitted with the application.

Can graduates choose any job?

Graduates with a degree level 7 or higher qualification can work in any job, provided it is legal and they meet any relevant occupational-registration requirements.[2] By contrast, for eligible non-degree level 7 or lower qualifications, visa conditions may require work related to the study field.[1][2]

Work conditions are not a job offer. Graduates still need to find their own employment and meet employer or professional requirements where relevant.

When do you need to apply?

In general, the application must be made no later than three months after the student visa expires. Doctoral graduates may have six months, while particular consecutive-qualification circumstances can allow up to 12 months from the first qualification’s student visa.[1]

The deadline matters. Keep completion letters, transcripts and qualification evidence ready near graduation, then check visa dates and the latest Immigration New Zealand instructions before submitting.

An eligibility change announced for 16 November 2026

Immigration New Zealand has announced an eligibility extension from 16 November 2026 for holders of an NZQCF Level 7 Graduate Diploma who studied full-time in New Zealand for the full qualification duration and also hold a bachelor’s degree from New Zealand or overseas.[1][3]

This is a future-dated change in the official announcement. Do not apply it to an application before its effective date without confirming the live rules and personal circumstances directly with Immigration New Zealand.[3]

Checklist before choosing a New Zealand programme

  1. Verify the NZQCF level and whether the programme is eligible for the Post-Study Work Visa.
  2. Check the full-time study duration in New Zealand and programme delivery model.
  3. Distinguish degree level 7+ from non-degree qualifications because work conditions may differ.
  4. Keep transcripts, completion letters and qualification evidence organised.
  5. Check application deadlines, fees, funds evidence and current rules before lodging.
