Artificial intelligence is reshaping the skills required in the workplace. Technical expertise remains important, but employers also need people who can think critically, collaborate across disciplines, and create practical solutions to complex challenges.

The University of Technology Sydney (UTS) offers the Bachelor of Creative Intelligence and Innovation (BCII), a multidisciplinary program designed to build an innovative mindset and skill set. It can be combined with 26 core degrees, allowing students to connect their chosen field with creativity, entrepreneurship, and problem-solving.

What Is Creative Intelligence?

Creative intelligence involves more than generating ideas. Students learn to examine challenges from multiple perspectives, connect knowledge across disciplines, and turn ideas into useful solutions.

The course develops critical and strategic thinking, systems thinking, futures thinking, creative methods, problem-solving, interdisciplinary collaboration, entrepreneurship, and innovation leadership. Students also learn about intrapreneurship: driving innovation from within an organisation.

Learning Through Real-World Projects

BCII learning activities include hackathons, think tanks, industry projects, and practical challenges. From their first subject, students can work on issues presented by businesses, government agencies, and community organisations.

UTS says its innovation network includes more than 1,200 partners. Previous collaborations have involved Google, UNICEF, Commonwealth Bank, NSW Health, Visa, Accenture, and the City of Sydney.

Course Structure and Duration

BCII is delivered over four years of full-time study at the UTS City Campus in Sydney. During the first three years, BCII subjects are generally taken in winter and summer periods, leaving the regular semesters for subjects in the student's core degree.

The fourth year is dedicated to full-time BCII study. Students may complete 6–12 credit points of innovation-related internship experience, with international internships and global studios also available. Most combinations require 240 credit points, while a combination with the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) requires 270.
