Study Art and Design in Vancouver: Discover Emily Carr University of Art + Design

For students who enjoy drawing, filmmaking, product design, or creating digital experiences, choosing a creative university takes more than finding a course title. You also need to look at the learning style, portfolio requirements, facilities, and the city where you will develop your practice.

One Canadian option is Emily Carr University of Art + Design (ECU) in Vancouver, British Columbia. The university focuses on art, design, and media, with a learning environment connected to studios, workshops, galleries, and creative practice.[1]

Creative fields to explore

ECU offers undergraduate routes into areas such as animation, film, illustration, communication design, industrial design, interaction design, and visual arts.[1] These options can suit students who want to combine creative work with practical skills and a portfolio they can show to studios, clients, or employers.

For postgraduate study, ECU offers a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) and Master of Design (MDes). Both graduate degrees are two-year, full-time programmes focused on studio practice, critical inquiry, feedback, and a thesis project.[3]

Foundation Year: time to explore before choosing a focus

All first-year undergraduate students begin with Foundation Year.[2] This gives students time to explore different creative processes before moving further into a chosen field.

For high-school students, this can be useful if you are still deciding whether illustration, design, media, or visual arts is the best fit. You still need to nominate a first and second programme choice in your application, as ECU requires both.[2]

Your portfolio is a key part of the application

Entry to a creative university is not assessed through grades alone. ECU identifies three main admission components: academic history, a portfolio, and English-language proficiency.[2]

A portfolio is more than a collection of your “best” work. ECU describes it as a collection of work, ideas, and vision that shows where you are in your creative journey and where you might go next.[2] A strong portfolio should therefore be clear, organised, and show how you think as well as what you make.

ECU also states that admission is competitive. Meeting academic requirements does not automatically result in an offer.[2]

Study and life in Vancouver: plan costs realistically

For international undergraduate students, ECU lists estimated tuition and mandatory fees of approximately CAD 28,632.30 per year, based on 2025–2026 costs and an example of completing a 120-credit bachelor’s degree in four years.[5] This is not a full living-cost budget and can change with credit load and the academic year.

You also need to budget for accommodation, transport, food, personal expenses, books, and studio supplies. ECU gives estimated Vancouver shared-housing costs of about CAD 800–1,200 per month, while private apartments are estimated at about CAD 1,800–3,000 per month.[5]

Scholarships for international students

ECU states that several international entrance scholarships worth CAD 2,000–5,000 are available for study at any level. Applicants are automatically considered when they apply to ECU, with awards assessed using academic achievement and artistic merit.[4]

A scholarship is not guaranteed, and the value, number of recipients, and requirements can change. Use this as a starting point, then check the official page when you are ready to apply.

RIM Education can help you organise programme options, review academic documents, and build a portfolio-application plan for creative study in Canada. Contact RIM Education to discuss your plans.

Important: Intakes, deadlines, programme availability, tuition, scholarships, living costs, and portfolio requirements can change. Always check ECU’s official pages and the current application instructions before applying.[2][4][5]
