The United States remains one of the world’s most attractive study destinations. Its universities, research facilities, multicultural environment, and global networks continue to draw Indonesian students. However, recent changes concerning student visa admission periods make academic and immigration planning increasingly important.

Key Changes at a Glance

  • The rule covers F, J, and I nonimmigrant classifications.
  • Duration of status will be replaced by admission with a fixed end date.
  • F and J admission generally follows the programme length, up to four years.
  • Students requiring more time may need to apply for an extension.
  • The rule’s status and effective date should always be verified through official sources.

What Is Changing in the US Student Visa System?

From Duration of Status to a Fixed Admission Period

Most F, J, and I visa holders were previously admitted under duration of status, or D/S. For F-1 students, this generally allowed them to remain while completing an authorised programme or practical training, provided they complied with the conditions of their status.

Under the new rule, admission will carry a specific end date. F and J visa holders may be admitted for the length of their programme, generally for no more than four years. Students requiring additional time will need to apply for an extension of stay through USCIS.

What Does This Mean for Indonesian Students?

The change does not prevent Indonesians from studying in the United States, but careful management of timelines and documents becomes more important.

  • Ensure that the passport, visa, Form I-20, and Form I-94 contain consistent information.
  • Check the authorised end date recorded when entering the United States.
  • Apply for an extension before the authorised stay expires when necessary.
  • Understand requirements for school transfers and programme changes.
  • Discuss Optional Practical Training plans with the university early.
  • Maintain organised academic and immigration records.

Important: The visa expiry date is not the only measure of authorised stay. Students must also check Form I-94 and their academic documents.

School Transfers and Programme Changes

The First Academic Year Requirement

F-1 students will generally be expected to complete one academic year at the institution that issued their initial Form I-20 before transferring, unless an exception is authorised in specific circumstances.

Additional Considerations for Graduate Students

Graduate-level students may face additional limitations on changing programmes or transferring institutions. Applicants should therefore consider curriculum, tuition fees, location, international student support, and long-term career goals when choosing a university.

When Will the Rule Take Effect?

The final rule is classified as a major rule and remains subject to congressional review. It was scheduled to take effect 60 days after publication in the Federal Register, but the date may change. Students should review updates from ICE, USCIS, the US Embassy, and their university before making decisions.
