Have you ever imagined seeing your name up on the big screen in the end credits of a Marvel movie? For most people, this might feel like a pipe dream. However, for Nathania Calosa Nema—affectionately known as Osa—that dream has officially become a reality. Osa is one of Indonesia's young talents who has proven that with the right education and sheer grit, breaking into the Hollywood film industry from the Land Down Under is entirely possible.

An Inspiring Journey: A "Dream Come True" Behind Marvel Films

Osa, a young woman originally from Semarang, currently works as a VFX Compositor at Rising Sun Pictures, a renowned visual effects studio based in Adelaide, Australia. Her international career path is nothing short of spectacular; she has contributed to the visual effects of massive projects, including the newest film Michael, the award-winning film Elvis, the Rowan Atkinson-led Netflix series Man vs. Bee, One Piece, as well as Marvel superhero blockbusters like Thor: Love and Thunder, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and many more.

For Osa, this achievement is the fruit of a childhood passion driven by her love for watching movies and cartoons. She describes her experience working in the Australian VFX industry as a "dream come true." Despite her success in handling major blockbusters, Osa still holds a grand vision: to continuously grow from a junior to a senior role, so she can guide and support fresh, upcoming talents entering the industry.

Her success did not happen overnight. She pursued her education at the Media Design School in New Zealand and constantly worked on building her portfolio. Osa also shared her secret to success: networking. According to her, having skills alone isn't enough if no one knows who you are. She emphasizes the importance of actively sending out showreels (portfolios), connecting on LinkedIn, and having the courage to ask for feedback from industry experts. Through this strategy, major studios can easily spot the talent you have to offer.

Why Australia is the Go-To Destination for VFX Artists

The film industry in Australia is currently booming. This rapid growth has prompted the Australian Government to be highly welcoming, even providing specialized visa pathways—such as the Entertainment Activities stream—for creative professionals in film and television. Osa herself utilized this visa to build her professional career there.

Beyond career opportunities, one thing Osa is incredibly grateful for is the work-life balance. In Australia, visual artists are valued, enjoying a healthy balance between their professional and personal lives, complemented by a highly supportive work environment where colleagues are patient in teaching new things. Financially, the compensation is highly rewarding, yielding a salary significantly higher than the average income in Indonesia.
