Study Art and Design in Canada: Meet Emily Carr University of Art + Design
If you enjoy making, designing, drawing or developing ideas through digital media, choosing an art and design university means finding a place to experiment—not simply picking a course name. Emily Carr University of Art + Design (ECU) in Vancouver can be a useful option to explore for students seeking a focused creative pathway.
ECU offers three undergraduate degrees: a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Design and Bachelor of Media Arts.[1] Its majors include 2D and 3D Animation, Communication Design, Film + Screen Arts, Illustration, Industrial Design, Interaction Design and Visual Arts.[1]
Start with a Foundation Year
Every ECU undergraduate begins with a Foundation Year.[1] This first year lets you explore art, design and media courses before you deepen your direction in a major. It can suit students with creative interests who still want to test whether animation, communication design, film, product design or visual practice feels like the right fit.
ECU says it has been Canada’s #1 university for Art + Design for seven consecutive years in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, and is the only Canadian university in the discipline’s global top 50.[4] A ranking can be useful context, but your portfolio, learning style and fit with the creative practice still matter more for a personal decision.
A Portfolio Is More Than a Collection of “Best” Work
ECU’s undergraduate application assesses three components: academic history, a portfolio and English-language proficiency.[2] In the admissions portal, applicants can upload work, process documentation or links to online/streaming content. Brief details such as a title, year, size or medium can help reviewers understand the work’s intention.[2]
Start documenting your process now: early sketches, experiments, revisions and final work. A strong portfolio shows how you think and develop, not only polished outcomes.
Intakes and Preparing for Canada
ECU currently lists Spring, Summer and Fall intakes, with Fall described as the most common period for new students.[2] For Fall 2027, applications open on 1 October 2026; the stated documents deadline is 15 January 2027 and the portfolio deadline is 31 January 2027.[2]
International applicants offered admission are directed to begin Canada’s immigration process within 15 days of paying their deposit and receiving a provincial attestation letter, then arrive with a valid study permit before the programme begins.[2] Deadlines and immigration rules can change, so check directly with ECU and Canadian authorities.
Scholarships to Watch
ECU lists several international entrance scholarships worth CAD 2,000–5,000, based on academic achievement and artistic merit; applicants are automatically considered for most awards when they apply.[3] A scholarship is not guaranteed and availability can change, so review the latest awards page and your offer carefully.
