Preparing for a LPDP Master’s and PhD Scholarship in 2027: Documents, Degree Choice and Study Plan
A planned LPDP education-support program can be a useful reason to begin preparing a Master’s or PhD application more systematically. Preparation, however, is not certainty. Jakarta’s JDIH records Governor Regulation No. 20 of 2026 on Education Quality Improvement Cost Assistance.[2] News reporting mentions a September 2027 target opening and 50 recipients.[1] Those figures, the schedule, scope, priority fields and eligibility should not be treated as final requirements until the official program announcement is available.
Use this period to build an academic profile that will remain useful for several scholarship opportunities—not to assume that every prospective applicant will qualify.
1. Define the problem and degree you want to pursue
Start with a problem you want to understand or help solve, rather than with a university name. For example, public-service digital transformation may lead towards Data Science, Public Policy, Information Systems or Cyber Security. Health resilience may connect with Public Health, Epidemiology, Health Management or a clinical field where appropriate. City needs are not a confirmed list of degrees; the official program will determine any actual priorities.
Write one paragraph answering:
- what issue you want to explore;
- evidence from your experience or achievements;
- why you need a Master’s or PhD;
- the realistic contribution you hope to make after study.
This becomes raw material for a CV, essays, study proposal and interview.
2. Build an organised document folder
Do not wait for a portal to open before finding documents. Create a digital folder with consistent file names for identity records, diploma, transcript, CV, certificates, portfolio and recommendation letters. Check certification, validity dates and language versions required by each scholarship and university.
LPDP’s 2026 policy, used here as an example of scholarship-preparation discipline rather than as Jakarta-program rules, requires applicants to complete and upload required documents and submit the application to obtain a registration code.[3] It also advises that recommendation letters, statements and other supporting documents must remain valid and be issued under the program’s conditions.[3]
3. Prepare university options and a realistic LoA plan
Build a shortlist around program fit, research or curriculum quality, living costs, language of instruction and career goals—not rankings alone. For overseas study, map English testing, application deadlines, visas and costs that may not be covered by a scholarship.
In LPDP’s 2026 policy, a Letter of Admission/Acceptance (LoA) is a formal university letter confirming admission; it must include the applicant’s name, study level, program and study-start information under LPDP conditions.[3] Requirements vary between scholarships, so do not treat another program’s LoA or deadline as a Jakarta rule.
4. Strengthen language ability and academic narrative
Choose an English test relevant to target universities and leave time to study and retake if necessary. Beyond scores, practise explaining your study plan: what you will learn, why the university fits, and how the degree connects to your experience and career goal.
For PhD study, preparation can include a research area, potential supervisor and concise proposal. For Master’s study, focus on the capabilities you plan to build and the professional role you are targeting.
5. Use official sources when the program opens
When an announcement is available, verify eligibility, residence criteria, study level, priority fields, funding components, timeline and selection process directly. Do not base a decision on news excerpts or social-media posts. If information changes, prioritise official documents from the program organiser.
