Food Science or Nutrition? Exploring the Bachelor of Food and Nutrition at PSB Academy Singapore

Food is not only about recipes or diet trends. Behind a single food product are questions about chemistry, safety, sustainability, culture, public health, and how people make eating choices. If you are interested in the connection between food and health but are unsure whether Food Science or Nutrition fits you better, a Bachelor of Food and Nutrition can be a useful starting point for understanding the difference.

In Singapore, PSB Academy lists the Bachelor of Food and Nutrition within its partnership with La Trobe University. The programme is listed as a bachelor’s degree with blended delivery—on-campus and online—and is available in full-time and part-time modes.[1][2]

What do students study?

PSB Academy says the programme explores environmental sustainability of food systems, sustainable diets, food product development, culture and food, and nutrition and disease. Students are also expected to integrate biochemistry, physiology, and food-chemistry principles when examining the role of diet in health maintenance, illness prevention, and health-promotion initiatives.[1]

This means Food and Nutrition sits at the intersection of several questions. Food science is closer to the properties, safety, processing, and development of food. Nutrition examines the relationship among nutrients, eating patterns, the body, and health. In practice, the two often meet—for example, when someone designs a food product that remains safe, acceptable to consumers, and supportive of nutritional needs.

La Trobe University’s Bachelor of Food and Nutrition page lists anatomy and physiology, chemistry foundations, and chemistry of food and cooking among core subjects. For its direct course award, the page refers to 360 credit points across three years.[3] The Singapore delivery structure can differ from the version administered directly in Australia, so prospective students should check the course structure for their selected intake and location.

Studying at PSB Academy Singapore

For the PSB Academy offering, the programme page lists a 24-month full-time and 48-month part-time duration, with possible completion in 16 or 32 months under certain conditions.[1] One route mentioned is PSB Academy’s Diploma in Food and Nutrition, which may make students eligible for module exemptions and advanced standing, but remains subject to university entry requirements.[1]

This does not mean every diploma holder automatically enters Year 2 or finishes earlier. Credit exemptions depend on qualifications, assessment outcomes, and the applicable approval. Ask for written confirmation of recognised modules, total fees after exemptions, and your individual duration before accepting an offer.

More than studying “healthy eating”

Examples of modules on the PSB page include Advanced Food Skills, Applied Food Science, Applied Research in Nutrition, Food Security and Sustainable Food Systems, Nutrition Education for Adults, Nutrition for Sports Performance, Nutrition Throughout Life, and Nutrition Placement.[1]

The list suggests that students can develop literacy in evidence, nutrition communication, food systems, and applied science. But a Food and Nutrition degree should not be assumed to be an automatic pathway to become a dietitian. PSB says graduates may progress to La Trobe University’s Master of Dietetics, subject to the university’s entry requirements.[1] Check the next programme’s requirements and professional-registration rules directly if clinical practice or a regulated profession is your goal.

Questions to ask before choosing

  • Is my interest closer to food product development, food safety, sustainability, public health, or nutrition education?
  • How many modules and credits will I take after an advanced-standing assessment?
  • Do the intake, delivery mode, and duration in my offer match the current programme page?
  • Which tuition, application, student-administration, materials, living, and immigration costs sit outside the advertised figure?
  • Does my intended profession require further study, membership, licensing, or registration?
